Why you need a CSCS card and how to get it as part of your training with HC Technical

What is the CSCS Card?

CSCS stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme and is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.  Launched in 1995 by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the purpose of the scheme was to help both contractors and employers identify and recruit construction labourers who have completed both basic training and competency standards in to health and safety.

Many large corporations and public sector organisations require their construction workers and labourers to hold a CSCS card. Notable companies who require all their workers to hold a CSCS include Network Rail, Tesco, HSBC and BP.

So why not get training to advance your career with HC Training and get your Blue CSCS skills card included for no extra charge on successful qualification through the Train the Painter scheme. CSCS cards are an industry-wide seal of approval that prove workers are qualified for their job role.

CSCS cards show evidence that individuals working on construction related sites have the necessary training and qualifications for the type of work they are required to carry out.

So, if you are working in a construction related industry, ensuring that you have evidence to prove your competency is essential. If you don’t have the proof needed to get on-site, you can’t do your job. This is why it is so important to have the correct CSCS card.

The CSCS Card is important because it provides the evidence that any individual who works or visits a Construction related site is fully aware of the health and safety implications. It also ensures that an individual does not pose a risk to other fellow colleagues whilst on a Construction related site.

It is a legal obligation, that all employers check that any of their employees who will be going on a Construction related site, must have a CSCS Card. Also, that the card is valid and in date as most cards expire after 5 years.  A database is maintained at CSCS of people working in construction related industries who have achieved, or are committed to achieving, a recognised construction related qualification.

Having a CSCS card while looking for construction related work makes you more employable, as a contractor will know that you have the right health and safety knowledge and are qualified for the job.

2. Better Pay

It's no secret that employers and contractors want to have more CSCS qualified workers on a construction related site. And they're willing to pay more to hire them.

3. A Form of Identification

The 2010 launch of the smart card includes a chip that contains your work history, current skill set and your qualifications. In essence, the new smart card is a portable CV that you can keep in your pocket.

4. Open up opportunities

As a CSCS card holder, you won’t be limited to who you can work for. Some companies only look for people with a CSCS card so it’s important to have one so that you’re not limiting your options when it comes to finding work or progressing in your career.  There is clear career progression to those who are willing to work hard and demonstrate their commitment.

5. Boost your reputation

As a construction related worker, it’s important to protect your reputation – especially if you’re self-employed. Having a CSCS card will show your commitment to safety and emphasise your credibility.

6. Keeps you and your colleagues safe

The main reason for introducing the CSCS card was to improve health and safety aspects for workers. The CSCS card is an assessment-based qualification that helps workers become more aware of their working environment and ensures that they follow the necessary health and safety protocols. By being aware of your surroundings, you are not only looking out for your own well-being but for your colleagues as well. You have to remember a construction site is one of the most hazardous working environments.

7. Multi Use Benefits

The CSCS card not only shows employers that you possess the necessary qualifications and knowledge. It can also be used for other functions as well. Many employers have taken advantage of this and have used CSCS cards as access cards, to record training and health and safety records, and monitor attendance as well. Employers can save a lot of time and money utilising the multiple functions that the CSCS card presents. And this is another welcoming reason for you hold a CSCS card.

8. It’s free
